NHA energy Consultants offer a complete service for a ESOS assessment, this is a scheme that is continuously on going and evolving year on year with more updates and legal requirements.

Completing an ESOS assessment now has additional requirements, in line with the 2023 regulations.
The guidance works alongside the legislation to help participants understand the requirements, but the ultimate source of ESOS requirements is the legislation.

Summary of the steps required to complete an ESOS assessment:

1. Calculate your total energy consumption
This is the energy used by assets held or activities carried out by your organisation or group. This includes the energy consumed by buildings, industrial processes and transport.

2. Identify your areas of significant energy consumption
This is the energy used by assets held, or activities carried out, by your organisation that needs to be included in an energy audit or covered by another route to compliance (see 4 below) and must account for at least 95% of your total energy consumption.

3. Calculate your energy intensity ratios
You must calculate energy intensity ratios for each of:

– buildings
– transport
– industrial processes
– other energy uses outside of the above 3

An energy intensity ratio is a measurement which relates an organisation’s consumption to an appropriate indicator activity. This allows comparison of energy efficiency performance over time.

The legal requirement is that the indicator for each organisational purpose is:

– quantifiable
– associated with the assets or activities that relate to the specific organisational purpose

All participants need to have their ESOS assessment signed off by an ESOS lead assessor, unless 100% of your energy supplies are covered by ISO 50001,  or your total energy consumption is less than 40,000 kWh.

SECR requires reporting on energy usage. The total amount of energy consumed by the company. Carbon emissions: Greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon dioxide, methane, and others.

Energy efficiency measures: Actions taken to improve energy efficiency. Intensity ratio: A comparison of emissions to a metric like turnover or units of production

NHA Energy Consultants offer for SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting)  the criteria require large UK companies and LLPs to report on their energy use and carbon emissions if they meet at least two of the following three thresholds in a given financial year: an annual turnover of £36 million or more, a balance sheet total of £18 million or more, or 250 or more employees. Quoted companies and LLPs are the primary entities subject to these regulations, with some exemptions for low energy users or certain public sector organisations.

1. Quoted companies: All UK-registered companies whose shares are listed on a stock exchange must comply with SECR.

2. Large unquoted companies: These are private sector companies that meet two or more of the following criteria: Annual Turnover: £36 million or more. Balance Sheet Total: £18 million or more. Employee Count: 250 or more employees.

3. Large Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs): Similar to large unquoted companies, LLPs must comply if they meet at least two of the same criteria.

4. Exemptions: Low energy users:
Companies that consume less than 40 MWh (megawatt-hours) of energy in a reporting year are considered low energy users and are exempt, though they must state this in their annual report.

CCA’s
NHA Energy Consultants offer (CCA) Climate change agreements services which are voluntary agreements made between UK industry and the Environment Agency to reduce energy use and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In return, operators receive a discount on the Climate Change Levy (CCL), a tax added to electricity and fuel bills. The Environment Agency administers the CCA scheme on behalf of the whole of the UK.
